Lavrov and Kerry stress need to speed up launching intra-Syrian dialogue in Geneva

Moscow, SANA – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US State Secretary John Kerry called for speeding up launching intra-Syrian dialogue in Geneva.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday that during a phone call, Lavrov and Kerry called for a “quick resumption of talks between the Syrian government and the entire spectrum of opposition under the UN aegis in Geneva, where the Syrians must decide on the future of their country.”

The statement said the two sides also agreed to continue working actively to boslter all aspects of the Syrian settlement via the International Syria Support Group (ISSG), in addition to agreeing on increasing interaction between states in the military field in the context of supporting the agreement on the cessation of combat activities in Syria.

Earlier today, the leaders of Russia, France, Britain, Germany, and Italy discussed in a video conference developments in Syria following the implementation of the agreement on the cessation of combat activities in Syria and means to resume intra-Syrian dialogue in Geneva, with Russian President Vladimir Putin affirming to French President Francois Hollande, UK Prime Minister David Cameron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi the need to continue fighting relentlessly against ISIS, Jabhat al-Nusra, and other terrorist organizations in Syria.
