Competitions of 2nd National Junior Olympics kick off

Damascus, SANA – The competitions of the 2nd National Junior Olympics kicked off on Monday morning, prior to the official opening ceremony which will be held on 6 PM at Tishreen Sports Complex.

The early competitions began with swimming events at Tishreen Olympic pool, with six events for young men and women, with these competitions witnessing a new Syrian junior record when Khaled Barakat from Damascus finished the 50 meters freestyle competition with a time of 25.88 seconds, winning the first medal of the event.

The results of the events are as follows:

In the men’s 50 meters freestyle, Khaled Barakat from Damascus came in first, Ala’a Maso from Aleppo second, and Laith Saqr from Quneitra third.

In the men’s 50 meters backstroke, Mohammad Naasani from Aleppo came in first, Bassel Habal from Damascus second, and Ibrahim Shbat from Damascus Countryside third.

In the men’s 200 meters IM, Khaled Barakat from Damascus came in first, Azad al-Sleiman from Quneuitra second, and Philip Boyaji from Aleppo third.

In the women’s 50 meters freestyle, Natalie Hanoun from Damascus came in first, Nelly Derzi from Aleppo second, and Lynn Tobaji from Quneitra third.

In the women’s 50 meters backstroke, Maya al-Ghadda from Damascus came in first, Refqa Mora from Aleppo second, and Lynn Tobaji from Quneitra third.

In the women’s 200 meters IM, Cham Nemr from Damascus came in first, Refqa Mora from Aleppo second, and Lujain Muala from Damascus Countryside third.

The preliminary competitions of weightlifting and tennis also began on Monday morning at al-Fayhaa Sports Complex.

Nine teams from Damascus, Damascus Countryside, Aleppo, Homs, Hama, Lattakia, Sweida, Hasaka, and the Local Administration are competing in the tennis events, with 32 male players and 22 female players competing in knockout tournaments leading to the quarterfinals.

Seven men’s teams from Damascus, Damascus Countryside, Aleppo, Homs, Hama, Lattakia, and the Local Administration are competing in the weightlifting evens in seven weight categories: 44, 50, 56, 62, 69, 77, 85, and 85+ kg divisions, while five women’s teams from Hama, Homs, Tartous, Lattakia, and the Local Administration are competing in the 44, 48, 53, 58, 69, and 69+ divisions.

Preliminary chess competitions also began in the Governorate Club with the participation of 72 male and 36 female competitors from 10 provinces.
