Syrian sport teams rank high regionally and internationally in 2015

Capitals, SANA- Over the year 2015, Syrian national sport teams have harvested a considerable number of medals and made high achievements at the regional and international championships proudly raising the Syrian flag despite all the difficult circumstances and the terrorist war launched against their homeland.

The Syrian national swimming team ranked high in the FINA World Championship hosted by the Russian city of Kazan over the past two weeks.

Syrian swimmer Ziad Barazi was qualified for the Olympic Games to be held in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

Earlier this month, Syria earned 1 gold, 2 silver, and 4 bronze medals in WAKO Asian kickboxing Championship.

In July, the Syrian Special Olympics team participated in the 2015 Special Olympics World Games which was held in Los Angeles city in California, the USA winning three gold medals, four silvers and one bronze.

In July also, Syrian athlete Ghufran Mohammad won the silver medal in the 400m hurdle race in Almaty International Athletics Championship being held in Kazakhstan.

In June 2015, Syrian athlete Majd-Eddin Ghazal won the gold medal in the high jump competition in the third leg of Asian Athletics Grand Prix Series held in Thailand.

Earlier during last May, athlete Ghufran Mohammad won the silver medal in the 400m hurdle race in Moscow International Championship.

In May also, athlete Ghazal won the gold medal in the high jump competition held in the framework of Moscow Open Cup.

In March 2015, the Syrian Special Olympic team for athletes won four medals in the 6th FAZAA weightlifting International Athletics Competition in UAE.

In the field of football, a new achievement has been recorded by the national team for men who rose 26 spots up and placed at 126th position with 225 points at the International Federation of Football Association (FIFA) latest standings.

The team also ranked at 15th position on the level of Asia at the new FIFA standings. According to FIFA March Standings, the team was ranked in 152nd position globally and 26 on Asia level.

In the Basketball, al-Wahda team won, on April 3rd, Syria’s the second place in the finals of the West Asian Basketball Clubs Championship for women after beating Jordan’s al-Orthodoxi team 81-52.

On June 1st, Syria’s men basketball team increased its chances to reach the finals of ASIAN Basketball Championship after beating its Iraqi counterpart 75/71 in a match held within the 15th West Asian Basketball Association (WABA) Championship held in the Jordanian capital of Amman.
