Russia says US arms ending up in terrorists’ hands

Moscow, SANA-The arms the US is sending to what it calls Syrian moderate opposition are winding up in the hands of extremists, which further exacerbates the situation, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich warned.

A case in point, the Russian official cited an incident when Jabhat al-Nusra launched a large offensive against the US-backed Hazm Movement, seizing massive amounts of weapons. Many “moderate fighters” joined the terrorist organization, raising serious doubts as to where the US arms are ending up.

The US has recently unveiled a program to train what it brands “moderate fighters” in Turkey, an appellation is uses to designate fighters it depicts as opposed to extremists, despite intelligence and media reports maintaining that they do not exist amid Syrian opposition largely dominated by extremist groups.

He said that a new round of Syrian consultative meetings is due in Moscow next April.

Russia hosted a round of inter-Syrian dialogue in Moscow which ended on January 29. The Syrian government’s delegation and five opposition groups agreed to a set of Russian-proposed principles called “Moscow Principles” that focused on preserving Syria’s unity and fighting terrorism.

Moscow worried over US statements on a potential of military intervention in Syria

In a relevant context, Moscow expressed worry over US statements which announced that the US army may
interfere to protect what it names “moderate opposition” and support it in Syria.

Lukashevich wondered about the final destination of arms sent by the US and its allies to the gunmen whom it calls “moderate”, saying “that was as topical as ever.”

He added “In light of that, the US statements mean that any attack by the Syrian forces  against the Syrian moderate opposition will open the door in front of a US attack on the governmental forces and this is worrying.”
