ILO: Occupational health and safety save 2.7 million workers’ lives in the world.

Damascus, SANA – A recent report issued last April by International Labor Organization (ILO) revealed that more than 2.7 million workers die as a result of occupational accidents or work-related diseases per year.

An ILO report also stated that there are some 374 million non-fatal work-related injuries and illnesses each year, many of these resulting in extended leave of absence from work which affects workers’ income.

In Syria, applying the occupational health and safety rules is governed by the national legislation, as well as conventions and recommendations issued by relevant Arab and international labor organizations which were ratified during the last quarter of the 20th century.

Social Insurance and Labor Director-General, Yahia Ahmad, said that a successful occupational health and safety practice requires the collaboration of all involved parties; the government, employers, and workers, to reach high levels in health and safety for workers, especially the young ones, as well as combating child labor.

In turn, Deputy Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, Rakan Ibrahim, said that the war in Syria created challenges when it comes to applying occupational safety rules, including destroying many factories and facilities by the terrorist organizations, and the lack of manpower and labor inspectors to ensure the enforcement of the law.
