Zakharova: Militants not adhering to the cessation of hostilities agreement in Syria should be eliminated

Moscow, SANA-Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova reaffirmed that Russia firmly believes that the future of Syria must be determined by Syrians themselves.

During a press conference in Moscow on Friday, Zakharova said that only Syrians can ensure the preservation of their motherland as a united, sovereign, multinational and multi-confessional country.

She said that Moscow satisfied with the Astana meeting as regards the strengthening of the cessation of hostilities agreement, adding that the potential of Astana as a venue to hold communications and to reach agreements is quite high possibilities but it does not substitute the Syrian talks in Geneva.

She pointed out that Moscow is taking certain steps to support the Geneva process which has gained new impetus thanks to meetings in Astana.

Zakharova said that militants who do not comply with the cessation of hostilities agreement in Syria should be eliminated.

She called for concerted efforts to push forward the process of the settlement of the crisis in Syria, adding that Russian-Iranian-Turkish cooperation on Syria is positive and Moscow hopes that this cooperation will be long-term, because everyone is well aware that a settlement in Syria is a long process and requires the concerted efforts of all the participating countries.

Zakharova reiterated Russia’s stance on the need to involve representatives of Syrian Kurds in the coming Syrian talks in Geneva.
