Churkin: Russian military personnel continue operations in Syria because ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusra are still active

New York, SANA- Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Vitaly Churkin stressed that the Russian military personnel are continuing their operations in Syria because the ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist organizations are still active in it.

Churkin added that there is an agreement adopted by the UN Security Council in a resolution which stresses the necessity of fighting the ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusra till eliminating them, saying “this is the goal which we are seeking to reach.”

Responding to the statements by the UN Special Envoy to Syria on the possibility of completely destroying the eastern neighborhoods of Aleppo by the coming of the Christmas due to the shelling operations, Churkin said in an interview with the BBC TV that the Russian shelling for few days can’t lead to such huge and shocking destruction.

He added that the Russians couldn’t have caused that destruction because they have been participating in the military operations in Syria from a relatively short period.

He indicated that the destruction in Aleppo City has been a result of the continued hostilities in the city since five years, saying that watching the scenes broadcast by the TV, one can see that Aleppo, particularly the eastern neighborhoods were destroyed even before the beginning of the Russian operations.
