Huge material damage to Aleppo National Museum due to terrorists’ attacks

Damascus, SANA- Aleppo National Museum was exposed to huge material damage due to the terrorist attacks with scores of rocket and mortar shells by takfiri terrorist organizations.

The Directorate-General for Antiquities and Museums in Syria said in a statement of which SANA received a copy that the museum suffered huge material damage in its construction structure during the past few days due to the fall down of a large number of shells fired by extremist terrorist organizations.

The shells partially destroyed the concrete roof in different parts of the museum in addition to causing significant damage in the infrastructure, the outer gates, the employees and curators’ offices and destroyed the room of the generators and parts of the outer wall, the Directorate explained.

In its statement, the directorate denounced the systematic terrorist attacks against the National Museum in Aleppo.

For his part, Head of the Department of Antiquities and Museums in Aleppo Eng. Khalid al-Masri told SANA reporter that the archaeological collections in the museum suffered little damages.

Aleppo National Museum was established in 1931 and expanded in 1966. It contains a treasure of important ruins and antiques of the history of Aleppo province and the world history. It is one of the most important museums in the world for its artifacts which date back to BC era. It includes five museums which are the Prehistory Museum, the Old Oriental Museum, the Classical Museum, the Arab-Islamic Museum and the Modern Art Museum.

Archaeological areas in Aleppo, particularly the old city which is listed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage, recently suffered systematic terrorist attacks by takfiri organizations that burned the ancient historic markets and tried to sneak into the ancient citadel by digging tunnels under it.
