Rome, SANA – Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform Eng. Ahmad al-Qadiri discussed with the Director-General of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) José Graziano da Silva the needs of the agricultural sector in Syria, particularly those related to supporting the production of strategic crops and vegetables to ensure food security.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of 33rd Session of FAO Regional Conference for the Near East (NERC) in the Italian capital Rome.
Minister al-Qadiri called for increasing aid provided by the FAO to the Syrian agricultural sector to help it overcome the repercussions of the current crisis.
He highlighted the need for paying more attention to the livestock sector in terms of providing food and vaccines and supporting the veterinary laboratories of the ministry as well as supporting the fish resources and helping small farmers to improve their livelihood conditions.
For his part, Da Silva said it is important to support and meet the Syrian needs at the current stage in accordance with the organization’s strategy for the years 2016-2017 that is aimed at implementing aid programs worth USD 152 million in help for the agricultural sector.
