Russia regrets failure of adopting UNSC statement on wider opposition representation in Geneva

Moscow, SANA-Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Moscow regrets the failure of the UN Security Council in adopting a presidential statement on providing a wider opposition delegation to participate in the next round of intra-Syrian dialogue in Geneva.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Zakharova said this stance is a cause for deep regret, especially since it runs counter to the decisions of the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) and the provisions of the UNSC resolutions.

She pointed out that France, the UK, and the US proposed amendments to the statement in which they claimed that the latest round of intra-Syrian talks in Geneva was “comprehensive” which effectively prevented the adopting of the Russian statement.

Zakharova affirmed that Moscow would continue to insist on the involvement of Syrian Kurds in the political settlement for the crisis in Syria, welcoming the statement of the US Department of State Deputy Spokesperson Mark Toner in which he announced that Russia and the US believe that a political process that reflects the desires and will of the Syrian people is what should ultimately decide the future leadership and the future government of Syria.

She said that the Russian side is extremely concerned about reports of ISIS shelling Deir Ezzor Military Airport with missiles stuffed with mustard gas on Monday.

She also affirmed that the recent victories of the Syrian Arab Army will pave the way for advancing in the direction Raqqa city and Deir Ezzor province.
