Zakharova: Liberation of Palmyra city a game changer in fight against ISIS

Moscow, SANA- Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova affirmed on Thursday that the liberation of Palmyra city from ISIS terrorists is a “game changer” in the fight against this terrorist organization.

During a press conference, Zakharova said that the actions of ISIS terrorists who sold the masterpieces stolen from Palmyra in the black market, carried out executions in Palmyra theater, blew up some of the ancient monuments of the city and planted mines in the archaeological areas show once again that these are not opposition…They have never planned to live in Syria, nor do they consider it to be their homeland.”

All mass media presented the pictures of barbarous actions of terrorists in Palmyra, she added.

She said the “constrained reaction of several influential members of the international community” of returning Palmyra under the control of the Syrian Arab Army was “surprising.”

“Blocking a greeting on the occasion of Palmyra’s liberation at the United Nations Security Council is something new,” she said.

“It shows that the West is fighting terrorists in Syria exclusively in pursuit of its own selfish political interests and is not concerned with Syria’s liberation from terrorists,” she added.

Zakharova pointed out that Russia will sign soon a MoU with the United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) on cooperation for the protection and reconstruction of cultural relics in Syria.

Zakharova expected the MoU to be signed on the sidelines of the next UNESCO session which will kick off in Paris on April 4th.

Commenting on the Syrian-Syrian dialogue in Geneva, Zakharova reiterated Russia’s call for forming a unified and wide delegation of the Syrian opposition to hold talks with the Syrian government.
