Moscow, SANA – US Secretary of State John Kerry is visiting Moscow on 23rd and 24th of March to discuss with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov bilateral cooperation and the urgent international issues, including mainly Syria.
The planned visit was confirmed by Russian Foreign Ministry on Saturday, which said in a statement that Moscow hopes Kerry’s visit, the third in less than a year, would contribute to normalizing relations between the two countries.
The statement said solving the crisis in Syria will be a key topic for discussion between Lavrov and Kerry.
The upcoming visit was announced earlier on Tuesday when Kerry said, following a meeting with his Georgian counterpart Mikheil Janelidze in Washington, “I will be travelling next week to Moscow to meet with President Putin and Foreign Minister Lavrov in order to discuss how we can effectively move the political process forward and try to take advantage of this moment.”
A new round of Intra-Syrian dialogue started Monday in the Swiss city Geneva. UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura has since then held several separate meetings with the delegation of the Syrian Arab Republic headed by Bashar al-Jaafari, Syria’s Permanent Representative to the UN and the “opposition” delegations.
Russia and the US agreed on the cessation of hostilities agreement in Syria that came into effect on 27 February.
