Syria’s internal opposition delegation meets de Mistura in Geneva

Geneva, SANA- UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura met on Friday with Syria’s internal opposition delegation at the UN headquarters in Geneva.

Following the meeting, member of delegation Sheikh Nawaf al-Milhem said in a statement to SANA that de Mistura affirmed to the delegation that he seeks a wider representation of the internal and external oppositions as it “enriches ideas for reaching a political solution to the crisis in Syria.”

For her part, Suhair Sarmini, also a member of the delegation, considered inviting the internal opposition for a meeting with de Mistura at the UN headquarters “an important step” which indicates a greater interest in the internal opposition on an equal footing with the rest of the opposition delegations, pointing out that the internal opposition delegation includes 15 persons.

“We are the ones living inside Syria and are aware of what is happening. Hence, we should come to the table as interlocutors rather than advisers, and this is what was put forward to de Mistura,” she said.

Sarmini added that de Mistura will meet again with the internal opposition delegation next Wednesday.

Member of the delegation, Secretary-General of the Syrian Democratic Party Ahmad Koussa said the Syrian people will not accept federalism or partition, adding that decisions to this effect mean nothing to the Syrian people who have the exclusive right to determine the future of their country.

He added that the delegation came to Geneva to participate in the Syrian-Syrian dialogue to reach agreements on the points agreed upon by the Syrians within the framework of national sovereignty.
