Russian Foreign Ministry: No timeframe for cessation of hostilities in Syria

Moscow, SANA-Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova dismissed as untrue the talk about a two-week timeframe for the cessation of hostilities in Syria.

“We noticed that a number of media outlets claimed in their reports that the cessation of hostilities will last for two weeks, and then it should end. This is untrue. We draw your attention to the fact that we’re not talking about a two-week timeframe for the cessation of hostilities, but it will not be limited in time,” Zakharova said during a press briefing in Moscow.

Moscow calls on Washington to be responsible in regard to the implementation of its obligations amid the cessation of hostilities in Syria, the spokeswoman said.
“It is necessary to be careful, conscientious and responsible in regard to the implementation of the Russian-US agreement on the cessation of hostilities in Syria,” she added.

Zakharova hoped that all statements by senior officials in Washington on some sort of a ‘plan B’ or any other alternative for Syria should hostilities resume “remain just words”, calling on the US to adhere to its obligations.

Zakharova said the Russian stance on the Syrian crisis remains unchanged, stressing that Syria is a democratic, free, sovereign and independent country.

The cessation of hostilities agreement in Syria took effect on Feb 27, with 31 violations reported.
