Syria and Belarus discuss cooperation in electric power sector

Damascus, SANA – Electricity Minister Imad Khamis and Ambassador of Belarus in Damascus Alexander Ponomarev discussed on Tuesday means to boost bilateral cooperation in the field of electric power.

Khamis said the Syrian government is looking forward to develop cooperation with Belarus in political and economic fields in a manner that would contribute to the reconstruction process in Syria.

The Minister reviewed the status of the electric power sector in Syria and the methodical vandalism it is subjected to at the hands of terrorist groups, as well as the exceptional efforts of Ministry workers to maintain this sector and preserve its infrastructure.

He explained that there is a strategic vision for the power sector that plans all the way up to 2030, which include massive investments valued at over EUR 20 billion.

Khamis also said that cooperation with Belarus in the electricity sector will begin with power transformers, with future plans for building a plant to manufacture them, with the ultimate goal being to have local production of electric power industries. He also invited Belarusian businessmen to invest in the power sector in Syria.

For his part, Ponomarev said that a delegation from Belarus will visit Syria soon and it will be chaired by the director general of a company that produces power transformers, and they will discuss cooperation in this field during the visit.

He said that cooperation with Syria in the power sector will be a long-term endeavor that will extend for the next five years.
