Damascus, SANA- Damascus countryside antiquities’ Department carried out a number of restoration and authentication works in Maaloula town in addition to evaluating the damage that the terrorist organizations has left on the towns’ antiquities and buildings.
This initiative has been carried out in coordination with the Damascus countryside governorate and in cooperation with the local society in the town.
Director of Damascus Countryside Antiquities Department Mahmud Hammoud asserted in a statement to SANA that works included a photo documentation of the volume of destruction inflicted by the terrorist organization on the towns’ worship places and houses, as they included removing the rubble from the main roads in the town to insure the possibility of moving in it.
Hammoud added that Mar Sarkis and Bacchus Monastery was one of the buildings that were restored where its destroyed stony walls in addition to an old traditional ceiling and stony arches of an old house have been rebuilt.
On April 2014, the army established full control over Maaloula and restored security and stability to it from terrorists who destroyed a number of its antiquities.
Maloula’s importance lies in being a Christian village with ancient religious ruins and a special symbolism for the Christians of Syria, and there are prominent sites in the town including the Mar Taqla Monastery and the Saints Monastery, which has a rare collection of ancient Byzantine icons.
