New anti-polio vaccination campaign starts next Sunday

Damascus, SANA – The Health Ministry is starting next Sunday a national anti-polio vaccination campaign for five days, targeting all children under five years.

Minister Nizar Yazigi told SANA in a statement that the campaign aims at reaching around 3 million children in all areas, adding that the Ministry had taken all required measures to make the campaign a success.

The Ministry, he explained, has deployed 9310 health workers and volunteers, 863 vehicles and 1332 mobile teams to carry out the mission.

Yazigi pointed out that the campaign is part of continued efforts exerted by the Ministry to protect children and come to eliminating polio again, confirming that the vaccines will be given free of charge and that they match the high standards of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Through a strict strategy and successive vaccination campaigns, the Ministry has succeeded in stopping the spread of polio, said the Minister, clarifying that no polio case has been registered in Syria since January 21, 2014.

The latest national polio vaccination campaign started on May 31st and lasted for five days, carried out at health centers, makeshift residential centers and through mobile teams in the various provinces.
