Bonn, SANA – Director-General of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization “UNESCO” Irina Bokova denounced the destruction of archeological and cultural heritage in Iraq and Syria at the hands of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria “ISIS” terrorist organization.

“Those properties, which were brutally looted and demolished, are belonging to the humanitarian heritage”, Bokova said in remarks to the opening of the 39th session of UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee in Bonn, Germany Sunday, adding that the humanitarian memory in the two countries was burnt.

Thirty-six sites are nominated for inscription on UNESCO’s World Heritage List for this year. The List encompasses 1007 sites in 161 countries.
