Griffiths: Food security situation in Gaza is intolerable, ceasefire is essential

Geneva, SANA- The UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator , Martin Griffiths, stressed that the food security situation in the Gaza Strip is intolerable after eight months of Israeli war, calling for the opening of all crossings and the flow of humanitarian and relief aid.

Griffiths stressed the need for a ceasefire, ensuring the safety of aid convoys, and not targeting relief workers and health institutions operating in the Strip.

“About nearly half a million Palestinians are facing catastrophic levels of acute food insecurity, and these numbers show that the situation is still surprisingly severe”, Griffiths noted.

On Wednesday, a report issued by 19 UN humanitarian agencies that about 96 percent of the population of Gaza, or 2.1 million people, are facing high levels of acute food insecurity.
