Damascus, SANA – The Electricity Ministry and the Petroleum and Mineral Resources Ministry held a meeting on Sunday to discuss the status of the power sector in the country.
During the meeting, the two Ministries decided to form a committee to study the feasibility of establishing a station for receiving liquefied gas on the coast and to increase fuel allocations for the Electricity Ministry to over 4,000 tons per day.
Petroleum Minister Sleiman al-Abbas said the constant terrorist attacks and the embargo imposed on Syria have resulted in decreasing production to less than 10,000 crude oil barrels per day, compared to 386,000 before the crisis, adding that terrorist attacks on gas pipelines have caused instability in supplying gas to power stations.
For his part, Electricity Minister Imad Khamis said that Syria’s power stations currently produce between 1,500 and 2,500 megawatts of electricity, depending on how much fuel is supplied, while Syria’s energy needs before the crisis reached around 9,000 megawatts.
Also during the meeting, the Petroleum Ministry presented a detailed review on oil, gas, and petroleum products production in Syria, stating that gas production average in 2014 was 15.49 million cubic meters per day, 12.78 million of them going to the Electricity Ministry.
The review detailed plans for rehabilitating oil and gas fields and production facilities to bring production levels back to normal gradually, in addition to reviewing the current difficulties and challenges affecting the Ministry’s work.
