Geneva, SANA- Syria affirmed that targeting about 20% of UN member states with unilateral coercive measures without mandate from the Security Council contributes to undermining the principles on which the multilateral world order has been based, stressing that there is no ethical or legal base that justifies imposing such measures and expanding its jurisdiction over other countries.
“Unilateral coercive measures impacted people’s ability to sustain a living in the targeted countries and they systemically violated human rights contrary to the international law and the Charter of the United Nations , ” Syrian Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the U.N. in Geneva, Hussam Edin Aala, said in a joint statement at the 51st Session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC 51) held in Geneva.
Ambassador Aala, declared that over-compliance with unilateral sanctions and bank risk management expose citizens of sanctioned countries to unjustifiable discrimination based on their nationality whereas these countries are hampered to meet their commitments to UN and other international organizations.
In this context, Aala declared that preventing UN agencies and NGOs from transferring funds to carry out their humanitarian operations in sanctioned countries impedes the delivery of essential humanitarian assistance and life-saving medical aid, noting that humanitarian exemptions proved to be but false claims; not carried out on the ground.
“Syria urges all States to unconditionally lift unilateral coercive measures in compliance with international law”, Ambassador Aala concluded.
