Ambassador Khaddour presents credentials to UN offices at Vienna on drugs and crime, and outer space affairs

Vienna, SANA- Ambassador Hassan Khaddour, Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna, presented his credential to Executive Director of the United Nations Office at Vienna on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Ghada Waly.

During the meeting which was held on Thursday , Ambassador Khaddour discussed with Waly reactivating and developing cooperation with the UN office on drug and crime in the fields of combating drug smuggling and cross-border smuggling, as well as combating terrorism and organized crime, and issues of combating human trafficking , and preventing antiquities theft and looting of historical, cultural and religious monuments.

Ambassador Khaddour said that circumstances which Syria has gone through should contribute to effective cooperation between the UN and the Syrian government , and working together to ensure facing challenges and obstacles that hinder the Syrian government’s efforts in various issues.

Khaddour stressed that before the crisis, Syria had played prominent role in these fields, but this role was negatively affected in recent years as a result of systematic attacks by armed terrorist organizations.

For her part, Waly affirmed that she recognizes the importance of providing support to Syria in the light of the difficult circumstances it is going through, and that she is interested in activating cooperation in various issues.

Ambassador Khaddour also presented his credentials to Director of the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), Simonetta Di Pippo.

Both sides discussed means to activating cooperation between Syria and the UN office in the framework of providing support to Authority for Remote Sensing in order to building national capacities through participation in training courses and workshops conducted by the committee on the use of outer space for peaceful purposes.
