Pedersen: Work of Committee of Discussing the Constitution must continue

Geneva, SANA – UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen said that the work of the Committee of Discussing the Constitution which concluded the activities of its third round on Saturday must continue, hoping that the participating delegation will reach agreement on the agenda and date of the next round.

In a press conference following the conclusion of the third round of meetings, Pedersen said that the participating delegations expressed commitment to meeting again to build upon the discussions of the current round, noting that there are considerable differences among those delegations.

He stressed that the committee is owned and led by Syrians, and only Syrian sides can decide when it will move forward and so the date of the next round is not for him to decide, stressing that the work of the committee must continue and build upon what has been achieved already.

Pedersen noting that there is considerable support for the committee from the international community, the Security Council, and the Astana platform, but more time is needed to reach an agenda.
