MPs discuss state general budget, call for monitoring expenditures

Damascus, SANA – The People’s Assembly on Wednesday continued deliberations on the government’s financial statement on the state’s general budget bill for the fiscal year 2015, set at SYP 1,554 billion.

The MPs stressed the need for monitoring expenditures, adopting new and effective financial, economic and social policies, combating corruption and tax evasion, holding those who manipulate currency exchange rates accountable, and supporting productive economic sectors.

They also called for preserving Syria’s foreign exchange reserves and reconsidering the allocations for reconstruction, estimated at SYP 50 billion, suggesting that that this amount should be increased.

The need for implementing social development plans, providing support to hospitals, and improving citizens’ living conditions as well as curbing increases in the prices of essential goods were also spotlighted.

A number of MPs called for tying wages to prices, saying that there is a decline in the efficiency of the subsidies provided the government to meet citizens’ basic needs.
