Lavrov: Alliance established by USA for striking ISIS should be done according to UN resolution

Moscow, SANA –Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Monday that the alliance established by the United States for striking the ISIS terrorist organization should be done according to a UN resolution.

In a lecture delivered at a university, Lavrov stressed that Russia will not take part in the U.S.-led international anti- ISIS alliance because Russia is convinced that efforts of confronting terrorism should be built on a solid basis of international law under the patronage of the UN Security Council which assumes the main responsibility of maintaining peace and security in the world.

“Russia awaits clarifications from Washington about how the U.S. is countering ISIS in the Syrian territories in parallel with providing military support to the opposition whose aim is overthrowing the regime in the country,” he added.

Lavrov considered directing blows to ISIS in Syria without reaching an agreement with the Syrian government in this regard is a violation of the UN principles.

“In parallel with airstrikes on the Syrian territories, the Syrian opposition which is fighting by the side of ISIS is gaining international military support. Furthermore, the western states consider this opposition as moderate,” the Russian FM clarified.

Lavrov went on to say that the western states do not want to help put pressure on the extremist forces in Syria, and they reject at the same time any cooperation with the Syrian state, adding “that has enabled ISIS to control many areas in Iraq and Syria.”

“The extremist forces are reinforcing their strength with modern weapons supplied to by the West, so we urge for international coordination and unification of efforts for counter-terrorism,” he said.
