Russian MoD: US accusations of Damascus using chemical weapons unfounded

Moscow, SANA- Russian Defense Ministry renewed that the US attempts to blame the Syrian Army for the use of chemical weapons are unfounded.

The ministry said in a statement on Saturday that that the United States’ continued attempts to blame the Syrian forces for the use of poisonous substances during the military operations against “opposition”  are based solely on the testimonies of the gunmen and have not confirmed by any evidences.

“The US administration is at best not showing any interest and often ignores the objective factors of terrorists using poisonous substances while fighting against Syrian army and civilians,” the ministry said.

It recalled that Syria disposed of its chemical weapons completely since 2014.

Russian MoD: US provocations caused Turkish attack on Afrin

In a statement issued later in the day, the Ministry said that the Turkish attack on Afrin area in Aleppo’s northern countryside is a result of Washington’s policies and its formation of an armed militia affiliated to it in the northeast of Syria.

The Ministry said that the main factors for the escalation of the situation in Afrin area are the provocations carried out by the United States by forming “border forces” in areas neighboring Turkey, in addition to other acts carried out by the Americans against the Syrian state and their support for armed groups.

The Ministry said that the Pentagon’s unsupervised operations for arming pro-US militias in the north of Syria contributed to the rapid escalation in the area and to the Turkish forces’ decision to carry out an operation.

The statement said that such irresponsible acts by Washington undermine the peace process and impede the intra-Syrian talks in Geneva.
