Lavrov, Kerry: Only the Syrians have right to determine future of their country

New York, SANA- Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov affirmed that the Syrian people only have the right to determine their future, saying that all parties should agree on this principle through being far from their private interpretations on how to apply, understand it and abandon their unilateral view.

Lavrov, at a joint press conference with his US counterpart John Kerry and UN Special Envoy to Syria Staffan De Mistura, described UN Security Council resolution No. 2254 on Syria as “excellent and good”.

Earlier on Friday, UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution on reaching a political solution to the crisis in Syria as agreed upon by the sides of “the International Group for Supporting Syria” which concluded works earlier in the day.

Resolution No. 2254 affirms that the Syrians are the only ones who determine the future of their country without any foreign intervention, and the terrorist organizations are out of any political process.

Lavrov said that the most important success of the meeting is activating “Vienna document” through adopting the resolution and authorizing de Mistura full to start the work and call for holding meetings between the Syrian Government and Various opposition groups.

He added that one of the main missions of De Mistura is finding mechanisms to facilitate reaching an accord between the Syrian government and opposition for the formation of “a comprehensive government.”

US Secretary of State, In turn, said that after the vote of UN Security Council, “we will witness launching a political track which reflects the work and efforts exerted by the International group for supporting Syria that is committed to the principles and timeframes for finding a solution to the crisis in Syria.

Kerry reiterated that there is no military solution to the crisis in Syria and the political solution is the only choice, affirming that only the Syrian people have the right to determine the future of their country.

For his part, De Mistura said that the international community showed unity towards the crisis in Syria through unanimously adopting resolution No.2254.
