Lavrov discusses with Cavusoglu the situation in Syria

Moscow, SANA – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed with Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu the steps for ceasing combat operations in Syria and launching Syrian dialogue in Astana.

A statement issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday said that the two ministers stressed the need to continue coordination for ceasing combat operations in Syria, separating the so-called moderate opposition from terrorists, and setting up a meeting at the capital of Kazakhstan to resolve the crisis in Syria.

In the same context, Lavrov said that Russia, Iran, and Turkey are working to formulate the agreements being prepared between Damascus and the “opposition,” voicing hope for establishing constructive dialogue with the new American administration which would help resolve the crisis in Syria.

On a relevant note, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said that Russia, Iran, and Turkey will be the guarantors of any agreements that may result from the Astana meeting.
