New York, SANA_ Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari stressed that the only real nuclear danger in the region lies in Israel’s possession of the nuclear weapons.
In a statement during the meeting of the UN General Assembly on the report of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), al-Jaafari said that the issue of the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons represents a national priority to Syria in word and deed as it took the initiative to join the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) early since 1968 before any EU states which claim keenness on the non-proliferation system.
He added that numerous EU states including Germany, Holland, Belgium, Italy and the NATO member, Turkey, possess nuclear weapons on their territories, which represents a blatant non-compliance to the NPT.
The Representative pointed out that Syria also signed the Safeguards Agreement with the IAEA in 1992 as it also submitted a bill on December, 27, 2003, which is still up till now a blueprint in the offices of the UNSC, aiming at establishing a nuclear weapon-free zone in the Middle East.
Al-Jaafari stressed that the credibility of our national commitment to the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons is out of question, particularly that this project, which is in accord with the provisions and objectives of IAEA faced the objection of the US delegation at UNSC, threatening of vetoing it.
He noted that some are still denying stubbornly the fact that the only real nuclear danger in the region is Israel’s possession of nuclear weapons as the Israeli long-range nuclear missiles could hit 5000 km far, so some like to open delusive fronts for distracting the public opinion from the danger of the Israeli nuclear reality on the peoples of the world, wondering for whom Israel made these 5000-km-long-range nuclear missiles?
Al-Jaafari considered that this dishonest and non-objective approach debunks their allegations of keenness on establishing a nuclear weapon-free zone in the Middle East, as the Europeans themselves were in charge with supplying “Israel” for decades with the nuclear technology that enabled it to possess the nuclear weapon including the sophisticated German submarines that could carry and launch the nuclear missiles.
He pointed out that the Europeans did not save any effort to take the Israeli nuclear weapons out of attention during the review conferences of the NPT in 2010 and 2015 in New York, as they worked on foiling the 2012 Conference to cover the Israeli possession of nuclear weapons which proves the double-standards policy they approach.
Al-Jaafari continued that the Security Council and the IAEA didn’t condemn the Israeli outrageous aggression against Syria in 2007 and they didn’t condemn the rejection of “Israel” to cooperate with the IAEA or to allow its inspectors to detect the source of the probable pollution which resulted from the used Israeli rockets or to detect the substances Israel used for destroying and polluting Deir Ezzor site.
He added that Israel continues to develop its military nuclear capability without any international supervision and it ignores all calls for making the Middle East a nuclear weapon free zone in a way that threatens the security and stability of the region.
Al-Jaafari said “We expected from the IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano to tackle these issues in his statement as postulates instead of using indecisive terms in the report.”
He clarified that the adherence to the statue of the IAEA by the Agency member states entails that the US should have informed the Agency of the information which it obtained before destroying the building in Deir Ezzor not after eight months of destroying it.
Al-Jaafari added that “Israel” didn’t only refrained from informing the IAEA of what it knows of information on the site if they were true, but it also launched a military aggression against the sovereignty of the Syrian territories.
He indicated that most of the conclusions of the IAEA regarding Deir Ezzor site during the mandate of its current director general are based on photos and analyses provided by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) which raises many questions on the credibility of the information received by the Agency taking into consideration that it was provided by a state that adopts a hostile political agenda towards Syria.
Al-Jaafari added that the assessment of the current director of the IAEA contradicts with that of his predecessor Mohamed ElBaradei in a way that raises many questions on the integrity of the report of the Agency’s current director general.
He concluded by saying that important reference on the armament, disarmament and international security issued by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) assigned a complete chapter to talk about what it called “The Israeli Nuclear Forces”, but it didn’t assign any paragraph, any line or any word to talk about something that is called “Syrian program”, calling upon the IAEA director general to read that chapter carefully and deal seriously with the Israeli nuclear weapon which threatens the life, security and safety of the peoples in the region as a whole.
