Lavrov: Russia and the US are studying steps on withdrawal of militants from Aleppo

Moscow, SANA – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Saturday Russia is ready to send military experts and diplomats to Geneva at any time to resume consultations with the US side on the situation in Aleppo.

“Moscow is ready to immediately send our military experts and diplomats to Geneva to work out joint actions with our US colleagues in line with the [new] American proposals, which would ensure the withdrawal of all militants without exception from eastern Aleppo,” said Lavrov in a press conference he held with his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida in Moscow.

He noted that during his meeting with his U.S. counterpart John Kerry in Rome yesterday the latter “passed on to us proposals from Washington that are in line with the suggestions from Russia’s experts.”

Lavrov said certain steps are being studied with Washington on the settlement in Aleppo and the withdrawal of the militants from all its eastern parts.

“It must not be a meeting for the sake of a meeting,” said Lavrov, adding “It is necessary to agree on a detailed timeline of steps,” as that “would ensure the withdrawal of all militants without exception from eastern Aleppo, and would provide unimpeded humanitarian supplies to the city’s residents and ensure the establishment of normal life in eastern Aleppo”.
