Peskov: Russia wants Syria to remain a united state

Moscow, SANA – The Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed that Russia is keen that Syria should maintain its territorial integrity.

“For Russia, of course, it is important that Syria remains a united state,” Peskov told reporters on Thursday.

As for the state’s internal structure, this is up to the Syrians to decide, he added.

“It is the Syrians themselves who must choose power structure of their country. The process should involve all confessional and ethnic groups living on the territory of Syria, whether it is Kurds or Shiites or Sunnis, Alawites, Druze and so forth,” Peskov stressed.

This process, he said, must be inclusive.

On what some Syrian Kurds are trying to do in some areas, Peskov said it is for this very reason that the Russian side’s stand has been firm on the need of the absolute participation of the Syrian Kurds in the ongoing intra-Syrian dialogue in Geneva.

In a relevant context, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said deciding on the issue of establishing a one-sided federal system in Syria cannot be done by some Syrian Kurds outside the framework of Geneva talks.
