Russia, Morocco emphasize maintaining Syrian territorial integrity

Moscow, SANA- Russia and Morocco emphasized their commitment to maintaining the Syrian territorial integrity and to settling the crisis in Syria via political means.

In a joint statement issued after talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and King of Morocco Mohammad VI in Kremlin on Tuesday, Moscow and Rabat called for a definite diplomatic political settlement in Syria and for launching comprehensive and direct dialogue based on the resolutions of the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) and the UN Security Council.

According to the statement, Morocco welcomed the initiative of the Russian President to form a wide front to fight terrorism, adding that the two sides called for enhancing international cooperation to fight terrorism and extremism.

For his part, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in a press conference after the talks that the decision taken on Monday regarding the partial withdrawal of the Russian Aerospace Forces in Syria was evaluated positively as a step contributing to building confidence.

He pointed out that the two sides expressed their support to the peaceful process currently going on in Syria, and that President Putin and King Mohammad VI discussed the situation in Syria and voiced their support for the talks currently taking place in Geneva.

Lavrov clarified that when Russia has taken its decision, it took into consideration the interests of the Syrian people and the Middle East, affirming that Moscow wants through this step to mobilize the maximum limit of the international support to fight terrorism.
