Premier at Cabinet session: Need for all elements of Syrian people to participate in elections

Damascus, SANA – The Cabinet discussed in its weekly session on Tuesday a number of services and economic issues, including reviewing the status of stalled and industrial companies and rehabilitating the Salamiya-Athraia-Khanassar-Aleppo road which the army had secured recently.

Chairing the session, Prime Minister Wael al-Halaqi said the large number of candidates who applied to stand for the People’s Assembly elections shows the people’s commitment to their national rights and duties, as well as showing their faith in the state’s institutions and their keenness of conducting the elections in a atmosphere of honest competition, which would mean that true representatives of the people will sit at the People’s Assembly.

The Premier said that holding elections in a time of war shows that the Syrian people and government are determined to continue political and democratic reforms, stressing the need for all elements of the Syrian people to participate in the elections.

On the questioning of the Internal Trade and Consumer Protection Minister and the Electricity Minister at the People’s Assembly recently, al-Halaqi said this is a good thing that reflects the strength and integrity of the state’s establishments and the legislative authority’s role in supervising the executive authority and holding it accountable, in addition to it being a chance for the government to explain the efforts and work it carries out.

He also said that instructions were given to repair the Salamiya-Athraia-Khanassar-Aleppo road as soon as possible, calling on the Petroleum and Internal Trade Ministries to make up for shortages in petroleum products and supplies in Aleppo city.

In turn, Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and Expatriates Minister Walid al-Moallem briefed the Cabinet on recent regional and international developments, asserting the government’s commitment to the cessation of hostilities and delivering humanitarian aid to all areas besieged by terrorist organizations in parallel with carrying out local reconciliations.
