Kremlin: Russia supports Syria in fighting terrorism

Moscow, SANA- Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov affirmed that Russia is consistently making efforts within the general international framework of seeking a peaceful and political settlement to the situation in Syria, expressing astonishment over Western accusations about Moscow thwarting Geneva dialogue through its support for the Syrian government in combating terrorism.

‘We consider this view incorrect. We cannot agree with it. Russia has been consistent in trying, within the channels of common international work, to find a peaceful settlement, a political settlement to the situation in Syria. Russia is also providing support to the legitimate leadership of the Syrian Arab Republic in terms of countering terrorism and fighting terrorist groups,” Peskov told reporters on Friday.

“The Syrian peace process will not be easy,” Peskov admitted, adding that Russia hopes that the intra-Syrian talks will continue even if reaching a settlement will take a significant amount of time.

UN Special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura had announced suspending the Syrian-Syrian talks in Geneva until the 25th of February, saying that “there is more work to be done, not only by our side, but by the sides concerned in this crisis.”

Peskov affirmed that Russia is “following with interest” what the Saudi regime had announced about its readiness to launch a “ground operation” in Syria, adding that the Russian side has not adopted so far a specific position on the Riyadh declaration about preparations for a ground operation in Syria because such intentions are uncorroborated as of yet.
