Austria calls for including President al-Assad in solution for Syrian crisis

Vienna, SANA – The Austrian President Heinz Fischer stressed the necessity of including President Bashar al-Assad in finding a solution for the crisis in Syria.

Informed sources said Fischer’s statement came after meetings with a number of presidents and kings on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session in New York, during which he pointed out that the number of countries moving in this direction is increasing continuously.

Also on the sideline of the UN General Assembly session, Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz reiterated the call to include President al-Assad in negotiations to find a diplomatic resolution for the crisis in Syria and to have all sides take part in combating terrorism, particularly ISIS.

In statements following meetings with counterparts from a number of countries, Kurz stressed the need to reach an international and regional consensus regarding the crisis in Syria and combating terrorism, noting that this would also stop the flow of illegal immigrants to Austria and Europe.

He added that recent positions and statements of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz about holding direct negotiations with President al-Assad and Syrian leadership is “an important step in the right way to resolve the crisis.”
