WHO promises more medicines and medical equipment in assistance to Hama Governorate

Hama, SANA – World Health Organization (WHO) promised on Saturday to provide Hama Governorate
with oxygen concentrators and medicines for cancer and renal insufficiency, in addition to laboratory equipment and materials for emergencies.

WHO Representative in Syria Elizabeth Hoff announced this assistance in a meeting with Hama Governor Ghassan Khalaf held to discuss enhancing cooperation between the two sides to the effect of fulfilling the governorate’s increasing needs in light of the arrival of large numbers of people from other provinces fleeing the terrorist groups.

She also voiced the Organization’s intention to launch training programs for Medicine students in Hama, in addition to working in the coming period on rehabilitating a number of health centers in coordination with the International Committee of the Red Cross.

For his part, Hama governor said the cooperation with the WHO has effectively contributed to improving the level of health services provided to the patients and other targeted people in the province.

Citing the growing pressure on social, health and services sectors caused by the displacement of residents from other areas, Khalaf asked for increased health assistance, especially regarding the protection from leishmaniasis now that summer has come.

Head of the Health Department of Hama Amer Sultan, who attended the meeting, expressed need for extra amounts of substances necessary for dialysis operations, in addition to other medicines and equipment for cancer.

In its participation in the activities of the 68th session of World Health Assembly, held in Geneva between 18 and 23 May, Syria, represented by Health Minister Nizar Yaziji, asked the WHO to provide the country’s needs of medical equipment, supplies and spare part that are difficult to obtain under the unjust economic blockade imposed on Syria.
