Iran: holding successive UN meetings on chemical weapons file in Syria is evidence of politicization

New York, SANA- Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Amir Saeed Iravani, has criticized the holding of successive meetings of the UN Security Council on the chemical weapons file in Syria despite its full cooperation in this regard, considering that this reinforces the suspicion of politicization and the repeated accusations against Damascus.

Iravani’s remarks came in a speech during a meeting of the UN Security Council on the “Syrian chemical file.”

“The holding of meetings related to this file in the Security Council at short intervals without change reinforces the suspicion of politicization and the repetition of accusations against Syria,” the Iranian diplomat said.

He added that “the Syrian Government’s move to submit a monthly report to the Director-General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) on the details of the destruction of such weapons and their production facilities deserves to be appreciated.”

“We believe that any investigation into the use of chemical weapons must be impartial, professional, credible, purposeful and fully consistent with the assurances and approaches of the Chemical Weapons Convention,” Iravani noted.

He stressed that the politicization of the provisions of the Chemical Weapons Convention and the exploitation of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons for political purposes threaten the credibility of this organization and the convention.

He pointed out that Syria voluntarily acceded to the Chemical Weapons Convention in 2013, and in this case, in which we encourage dialogue and consultation between the parties, we firmly believe in the necessity of officially recognizing the cooperation between the Syrian Arab Republic and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

He said “In view of the fact that Syria has complied with the requirements of the Chemical Weapons Convention and it cooperates constructively with the Organization, the management of this file in a political atmosphere and with a double standard approach only diverts discussions from their technical nature, while we believe that these issues should be discussed and investigated in a technical direction and only at the Organization. “
