Iran: Some countries politicized the chemical weapons file in Syria

New York, SANA- Iran has condemned the politicization of the chemical weapons file in Syria by some member states of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), noting that the Syrian state met its commitments and exerted constructive efforts in this file.

Delivering a speech Friday during the UN Security Council session on Syria, Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Iran to the United Nations, Zahra Ershadi, said “Syria has exerted real efforts to meet its commitments and has proven its willingness to cooperate with the technical secretariat of OPCW “.

“It is frustrating that some member states have politicized the chemical weapons file in Syria and prevented the Organization from affirming Syria’s commitment to its obligations in a way that leads to dialogue and constructive cooperation”, she added.

Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh, stressed during a session of the UN Security Council on Syria that the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of OPCW Convention represents an opportunity to renew the call to keep the Organization away from politicization, preserve the technical nature of its work and address the wrong practices of its various teams.
