San Antonio de Belen, Costa Rica, Cuban leader Raul Castro has called on the US to end the economic embargo against the country as relations between the two nations undergo a historic thaw.
Last month, Castro and US President Barack Obama announced that Havana and Washington would begin
to rebuild long-severed diplomatic ties by reopening embassies in each other’s countries.
“The main problem has not been resolved: the economic, commercial and financial blockade, which causes huge human and economic damage and is a violation of international rights,” Castro said during the opening ceremony of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) summit in San Antonio de Belen in Costa Rica on
Wednesday.
He suggested that Obama uses his executive powers to extend measures similar to those the US announced for the telecom industry to the rest of Cuba’s economy.
