Damascus, SANA – Minister of State for Environment Affairs Nazira Serkis said that a funding plan to carry out biosafety projects in Syria has been set up, benefiting from financial grants presented by the Global Environmental Facility and the Nairobi Office of the UN Environment Program (UNEP).

In a statement to journalists, the Minister added that the ministry is currently coordinating with the technical director of the UNEP biosafety programs and projects in order to carry out such projects, in addition to preparing the 3rd National Report on the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.

She noted that Syria is the first country in the Arab world and the fifteenth worldwide out of 158 countries which joined the Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Protocol, as a complement to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.

On November 1st, Syria received a grant from the UNEP to establish a website that could help facilitate the implementation of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.
