Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and Expatriates Minister Walid al-Moallem passes away

Damascus, SANA-The Presidency of the Cabinet and the Foreign and Expatriates Ministry have mourned the death of Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and Expatriates Minister Walid al-Moallem who passed away on Monday at dawn.

Minister al-Moallem will be escorted on Monday afternoon from al-Shami Hospital to his final resting place in al-Mezzeh cemetery.

The Late Minister was a longtime diplomat who has been known for his honorable national stances at different political and diplomatic arenas. He was born in Damascus in 1941, and he studied at the public schools from the year 1948 to 1960 as he obtained a secondary school certificate, and he joined Cairo University, and he graduated from it in the year 1963 with a B.A. in economics.

He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the year 1964 and served in the following missions “Tanzania, Saudi Arabia, Spain and England.” In the year 1975, he was appointed as Syria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Romania till the year 1980 as he was appointed as a Director of the Documentation and Translation Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from the year 1980 to 1984, and later he was appointed as a Director of the Private Offices Department from 1984 to 1990.

The Late al-Moallem was appointed as Syria’s Ambassador to the US from the year 1990 to the year 1999, and then he was appointed as an Assistant Foreign Minister in the beginning of the year 2000, and he was later appointed as a Deputy Foreign Minister according to the decree No. 8 of 9/1/2005, and he was appointed as Foreign Minister since the year 2006, and in 2012, he was appointed as Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and Expatriates Minister.

He has four books (Palestine and Armed Peace in 1970), (Syria in the Mandate Period from 1917 to 1948), (Syria from Independence to Unity from 1948 to 1958) and (The World and the Middle East from the American Perspective).

He is married and he has three children.
