Hama production of fig expected to reach 7,000 tons

Hama, SANA- Hama Agriculture Directorate said that the province’s production of fig crop for the current agricultural season is expected to reach 7,378 tons most of them for rainfed areas.

Head of the Planning and International Cooperation Department at the Directorate, Eng. Mwafak Al-Najjar told SANA that fig trees are planted over an area of 14,715 dunums, including 459 irrigated dunums, which are estimated to produce 389 tons of fig and 14,256 rainfed dunums, which are estimated to produce 6,989 tons of fig.

Al-Najjar added that Masyaf area is considered as one of the distinguished areas with fig cultivation, due to be a high mountainous area and its appropriate atmosphere and soil.

For their part, a number of farmers indicated that the fig is a basic source for the locals’ livelihood.
