Moscow, SANA – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed during a telephone conversation with Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu preparations for a new meeting within the framework of the Astana platform.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the two parties affirmed their commitment to working towards a settlement in Syria on the basis of Security Council resolution no. 2254.
The Ministry said the two ministers discussed holding a new international meeting about Syria in Astana, which is due to be held at the end of November.
Lavrov and Cavusoglu also exchanged views on the steps intended to guarantee that the meeting will yield positive results.
For his part, Russian president’s special envoy for the Middle East and African countries, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said that there is an agreement between all the participants in framework of Astana on a high level for the delegations to hold a meeting at the end of November.
Bogdanov added that “the file of Syria is very important and we are exerting efforts to solve the crisis in it through peaceful means in framework of the political consultations based on the Security Council’s resolution no. /2254/, and I think that Astana track plays a significant, active and effective role.”
Last September, the three guarantor states “Russia, Iran and Turkey” held a summit in Tehran as its concluding statement affirmed commitment to Syria’s unity and sovereignty and the continuation in combating terrorism and the adherence to the goals and principles of the UN Charter.
