New York, SANA – Syria has signed Minamata Convention on Mercury which was adopted by the UN member states on October 10th, 2013 in the Japanese city of Kumamoto.
Syria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Bashar al-Jaafari, signed the treaty on behalf of the government of the Syrian Arab Republic at the UN headquarters in New York city on Thursday.
The agreement is mainly significant since it seeks to manage mercury in an efficient, effective and coherent manner and prevent its adverse effects on human health and environment.
The signature took place during a special ceremony organized by UN Office of Legal Affairs, bringing together representatives of 18 states.
The Minamata Convention on Mercury is an international treaty designed to protect human health and the environment from anthropogenic emissions and releases of mercury and mercury compounds.
