Moscow will confront all attempts to politicize investigation into using chemicals in Syria

Moscow, SANA- Russia affirmed that it will continue to confront all attempts to politicize the investigation into the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

In a statement following 56th OPCW Emergency Session held upon the United States’ request, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that since the beginning, it has rejected the OPCW’s draft resolution proposed by the US which calls upon Syria to “reveal what obtains of chemical weapons” as it is void because it preemptively considers that Syria used “chemical weapons in Khan Sheikhoun.”

The statement added that these demands are “the result of Washington’s mean behavior and they are based on weak conclusions,” reached by the 7th report of the Joint Investigative Mechanism (JIM) on the use of chemicals in Syria.

Commenting on the moves by the OPCW, the Foreign Ministry said that Russia referred to the repercussions of those conclusions as it voted the draft resolution on November 2nd and after consultations with Washington and those who stood by it, it was forced to withdraw its draft resolution.

The statement considered that the calls upon Syria in this regard are similar to the calls upon Iraq before invading it, saying that “all of these moves remind of the legendary charges against Iraq of obtaining mass destruction weapons.”
