Moscow, SANA – The latest developments on finding a political settlement to the crisis in Syria as well as counter-terrorism efforts were the focus of talks between Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov and China’s Special Envoy for Syria Xie Xiaoyan.
Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Bogdanov and Xiaoyan have exchanged viewpoints on several issues related to a long-term political settlement in Syria with focus laid on the need to respect the Syrian Arab Republic’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
According to the Ministry, the two sides also discussed procedures to be taken to achieve political and military stability in Syria, eradicate terrorism and improve the humanitarian situation in the country, stressing the importance of exerting more regional and international efforts to push forward towards a political settlement in Syria in lihgt of the UNSC resolution no. 2254.
The Russian and Chinese diplomats agreed on the need to further enhance cooperation on bilateral level, within the framework of the UN or other international circles.
Earlier, China’s Special Envoy for Syria Xie Xiaoyan held a press conference in Moscow as he stressed China’s readiness to take part in Astana talks on Syria if an official invitation is extended to it, hailing efforts exerted to solve the crisis in the country.
Gatilov: Russia submits draft resolution that supports creation of de-escalation zones in Syria
In the same context, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said oat a meeting for the United Nations Security Council that Russia has submitted a draft resolution that supports the establishment of de-escalation zones in Syria.
In a statement to journalists, Gatilov noted that the draft resolution is still under discussion and we are still awaiting for the response, indicating that it aims at supporting agreements adopted during Astana talks.
