UN Human Rights Council adopts results of Universal Periodic Review of human rights in Syria

Geneva, SANA- The UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has adopted in its 50th  regular session held currently in Geneva, the results of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of human rights in Syria as the interventions of the heads of delegations present at the session welcomed the steps taken by Syria in the field of  enhancing and protecting the  human rights in various domains despite of the exceptional circumstances that the country is passing through and the challenges it faces.

Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and International Organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Husam El-Din Ala, pointed out in a statement during the session that Syria accepted most of the recommendations presented to it during the review session of its national report submitted on 24 last January.

Ala expressed Syria’s keenness on cooperation with the Universal Periodic Review Mechanism of the Human Rights Council, as considered the most neutral instrument mechanism that empowers the Council to carry out a constructive interactive dialogue for promoting and respecting human rights in  various Member States equally and without discrimination,  taking into account the principles of cooperation and objective dialogue, far from selectivity and politicization.

He said that Syria is keen on working seriously to implement the recommendations it have approved in accordance with available capacities and in the context of its national conditions and priorities, in a way that enables the Syrian citizens to enjoy their human rights, including the right to development and maintain their basic needs in light of the repercussions of the terrorist war and the unilateral coercive measures imposed on the country.

He also asserted that Syria is determined to cleanse its territory of the remnants of terrorism with the aim of protecting its citizens and consolidate the security of its territory.

he added that Syria implements anti-terrorist operations in full respect of its legal obligations and is working to develop national legislations to deal with multiple forms of crimes committed by terrorist organizations.

Ala said that combating terrorism requires international cooperation that respects the sovereignty of states, without exceeding their national jurisdiction, and implement the UN resolutions that oblige states to dry up the financing of terrorism and control borders against the movement of terrorists, prevent their training and providing arms to them.

Ambassador Ala pointed out to Syria’s cooperation with the United Nations humanitarian agencies in the framework of the humanitarian response and its commitment to providing humanitarian aid to all parts of the country, criticizing the Western calls to continue the entry of the humanitarian aid through illegal crossings which are controlled by terrorist organizations, as considered “a violation of the UN Charter and the principles that govern the work of international humanitarian agencies.”

He expressed Syria’s commitment to the political solution based on national dialogue among the Syrians, asserting that the political process is owned and led by Syria without any foreign interference or preconditions.
